RED and Black Arrows converged on St Andrews last weekend to celebrate a special anniversary.

All of the current Red Arrows flew into RAF Leuchars to attend a dinner last Sunday marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of their forerunners, the famous Black Arrows RAF aerobatic team which, with their all-black Hawker Hunter aircraft, performed at scores of air displays throughout the UK and Europe from 1957-60.

Led initially by Squadron Leader Roger Topp and later by Squadron Leader Peter Latham, the team was drawn from No 111 ('Treble One') Squadron, ''The Tremblers,''currently based at Leuchars, and gained international acclaim for looping 22 aircraft at the Farnborough Air Show of 1958 — a feat that has never been emulated anywhere in the world.

The previous year, at Farnborough, had seen the first demonstration by jet aircraft of a 'Diamond 9' formation.
