ST ANDREWS poshest public loos — in the Links Trust Clubhouse along West Sands — are soon to have a challenger to the title.

While luxury hand products, superior fittings and de-luxe paper towels have long been available in the 'Ladies' at the publicly-owned Links Clubhouse, the former Fife Council loos at the West Port in St Andrews look set to give them a run for their money.

Property developer Des Le Marquand, of Fintry, near Stirling has spent thousands making sure there will be luxury facilities available free every day to anyone off the street, right in the centre of the home of golf.

As revealed in the Citizen in August, he beat around 30 rivals in a bidding frenzy over the run-down toilets which he bought from the council for £195,000.

He then invited Citizen readers to submit ideas for their use, and was "pleasantly surprised'' by the response. Suggestions ranged from turning the historic building into a children's play area or back into a public toilet.

He said that, until he had reached a decision on what to do with the building, he would re-open it for public use.
